Punjabi Movies Based on True Stories — Real Lives and Real Events
"Based on a true story" covers a lot of ground, so this list is explicit about which kind each film is. Some are direct adaptations of a documented life: a soldier, a hockey captain, a memoir with a named author. Others are invented characters placed inside events that definitely happened, which is a different and more honest thing to be. And a couple sit on the line between history and folklore, where Punjab keeps a great deal of its past anyway. The order is editorial rather than chronological — these jump around Punjab's history, and each entry says which period it is reaching for. Where a film argues with the record rather than simply reciting it, the entry says so.

Chaar Sahibzaade
2014An animated retelling of the martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh's four sons — history that sits at the centre of Sikh memory rather than an adaptation of any single account. It was a commercial success on a scale Punjabi cinema had not seen for a religious film, and a sequel followed.

Shaheed-E-Mohabbat Boota Singh
1999Gurdas Maan as Boota Singh, a former soldier who married a woman abducted during Partition and then lost her to the recovery machinery of the two new states. The Boota Singh case is documented history, and the film follows its outline closely rather than softening the ending.

The Black Prince
2017Satinder Sartaaj in his acting debut as Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the Sikh Empire, taken to Britain as a child and raised under Queen Victoria's patronage. Made largely in English alongside Punjabi, and it sticks closely to the documented outline of his life.

Sajjan Singh Rangroot
2018Diljit Dosanjh as a Sikh soldier sent to the trenches of the First World War, where more than a million Indian troops served. The individual character is written; the deployment he is placed inside is documented history that Punjabi cinema had barely touched before this.

Punjab 1984
2014Directed by Anurag Singh, with Diljit Dosanjh and Kirron Kher, about a mother searching for a son who has disappeared during the violence of 1980s Punjab. The family is invented. The disappearances, and the machinery that produced them, are not — and the film is clear about that distinction.

Subedar Joginder Singh
2018Gippy Grewal as Joginder Singh, awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his stand during the 1962 war with China. A straight biographical film about a decorated soldier, made for a Punjabi audience that largely knew the name without knowing the detail.

Rupinder Gandhi The Gangster?
2015Built on the life of Rupinder Singh Gandhi, a figure from the overlap between Punjab's student politics and its crime, whose story circulated locally long before anyone filmed it. The question mark in the title is doing real work. A sequel followed in 2017.

2018Ammy Virk as Harjeet Singh, the hockey player who captained India's junior team to the 2016 Junior World Cup. It is a sports biopic in the conventional sense — training, setback, final — but the subject is real, recent and verifiable, which most Punjabi films are not.

Dakuaan Da Munda
2018Adapted from Mintu Gurusaria's autobiography of the same name, about growing up around crime and heroin addiction in Punjab and eventually getting out. The book came first, which is rarer in Punjabi cinema than it should be. A sequel followed in 2022.

2023Ammy Virk as Jeona Morh, a nineteenth-century Punjabi outlaw who already lived in folk songs and village legend long before any film existed. What it adapts is therefore a mix of record and folklore, which is worth knowing before you treat any of it as documentary.
