Punjabi Rappers — The Artists Who Built Punjabi Hip-Hop
Punjabi rap did not start in Punjab. It started in the diaspora, with artists in the United States, Canada and Britain who had grown up on hip-hop and had no Punjabi scene to join, and it only came home once there was an audience waiting. Everything since — the Mafia Mundeer era, the Moosewala years, the current Canadian wave — is a variation on that same import route. The ten artists below are ordered roughly by influence and chronology rather than by streams. It is worth saying plainly that this remains an overwhelmingly male field; the women in Punjabi hip-hop have mostly been featured vocalists rather than headline rappers.

Bohemia
Punjabi rap pioneerWidely credited as the first artist to rap in Punjabi and build a career on it, working out of the United States in the early 2000s when there was no Punjabi hip-hop scene to belong to. Everyone below him on this list is downstream of what he proved could be done.

Yo Yo Honey Singh
The artist who turned Punjabi rap into a mainstream Indian product. He came up through the Mafia Mundeer collective, released International Villager in 2011, and spent the years afterwards on Hindi film soundtracks. Divisive as a lyricist, and completely undeniable as a commercial force.

Sidhu Moose Wala
Started as a lyricist, broke through with 'So High' in 2017, and within five years was the most consequential figure in Punjabi music. His writing pulled village politics, caste and grief into a genre that had mostly been about cars. He was shot dead in Punjab in May 2022, aged 28.

Karan Aujla
He wrote for other artists before fronting his own records, and the writing is still the strongest thing about him — dense, conversational, and funnier than the genre usually allows. Making Memories in 2023 and the touring around it made him one of the biggest Punjabi acts working anywhere.

AP Dhillon
Based in Canada, and the artist most associated with the shift from dhol-driven Punjabi music to slow, atmospheric, R&B-shaped production. 'Brown Munde', with Gurinder Gill and Shinda Kahlon, became an identity anthem for a generation of young Punjabis growing up abroad.

Shubh
Another Canada-based artist working in the same lane as AP Dhillon, but sparser and more patient with silence. 'We Rollin' and 'No Love' both travelled a long way past the Punjabi audience, largely through short-form video, and he moved to large international tours quickly.

Badshah
Came out of the same Mafia Mundeer circle as Honey Singh and then built a separate career sitting between Punjabi and Hindi rap. He is a hook writer more than a technical rapper, and he has been extremely good at that particular job for well over a decade.

Raftaar
A Delhi rapper who works across Punjabi and Hindi and is one of the more technically capable writers in Indian rap. He also came through Mafia Mundeer, and in recent years has spent nearly as much time developing other artists as releasing his own material.

Prem Dhillon
Best known for 'Old Skool' with Sidhu Moose Wala, and one of the artists who carried that harder, village-rooted strain of Punjabi rap forward after him. His delivery is deliberately unpolished, and that roughness is a large part of the appeal.

Fateh DOE
A Punjabi-American rapper who has worked in both the North American hip-hop scene and Punjabi music, and one of the earlier artists to try to bridge the two properly — as a body of work rather than as an occasional feature verse.
